Low Maintenance, High Color – Fall Gardening Ideas

When I think of fall gardening, I think of a second spring. Recharged by the cool air, I’m fired up to do some planting! One of the reasons I really enjoy planting in the fall is that there is less thought to it. You just plant and go! At this time of year, plants are winding down. When you do plant, be sure to amend the soil with a good compost and mycorrhizae. Top-dress with some mulch, water the plants well, and Presto! Your plants are set! Since the plants require less watering at this time of year, you may not have to go back and water again. (It is still recommended to check the soil moisture daily, especially on warmer days.) Next spring, your plants will reemerge from dormancy, no hand-holding necessary.

Designing an Outdoor Room

Due to the uncertainty in the real estate market, many clients we work with now choose to expand their current homes, rather than move to a larger house.  Rather than doing a traditional addition, one alternative is to add an outdoor room to your home.  An outdoor room essentially serves two purposes: it is an expansion of living space, and it allows its users to enjoy their outdoors.  This creates a transitional space, one that is part inside, part outside, and that can serve many purposes.

Fall Container Gardening

Fall Container Gardening is a great way to extend the season and enjoy a little color before the landscapes turns to its dreary shade of grey for Winter.

Once the heat of summer passes, the annuals that have been delighting you all season long seem to slow down and cease to bloom; maybe your containers dried out a little bit while you were on vacation and now they need a little sprucing up. Those tired annuals have given their all and now it’s time for a refresher.

Hydroponics at Winterberry

My name is Christopher Meade and I am a greenhouse grower here at Winterberry Gardens. I am a certified Master Gardener, Accredited Nursery Professional and I have a degree in Horticulture.

This season at Winterberry, we’ve been utilizing flood tables (Ebb and Flow) that have the capability to send water to many plants all at the same time at any given notice for as long as you’d like. The flood tables were installed at the beginning of this season inside two of our three growing houses with the third to be completed by the end of this current season.
