Get your Garden Ready for Summer!

With our most recent March snowstorm, thinking about our spring and summer gardens might not be the most important project on our minds. However, snowy, cold, late winter days are perfect times to start planning for your best garden ever. You can start getting your garden ready today!

It starts with creating your garden plan. I like doing mine on graph paper so as to plan my garden to scale.

Next, it’s time to order seeds and get ready to start them indoors or make a list of the number of plants you will need per your garden plan. Once the weather breaks, it’s time to clean the garden of any debris that accumulated during winter. That’s exactly where garden pests like to hang out. As soon as the garden can be worked, start tilling the soil, while adding a generous amount of compost just before you till. All plants love and benefit from a good dose of compost every year.

2015 Edibles at Winterberry

Do you ever notice how much money you spend on vegetables, herbs and fruit? Do you know what kind of chemicals are being sprayed onto the products that you are buying? Sure you can purchase only organic foods but the cost is just too much sometimes. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to be able to go out into your own back yard and pick the freshest produce whenever you want. It’s so much better than going to the store when it’s right at your fingertips at home.

Hydroponics at Winterberry

My name is Christopher Meade and I am a greenhouse grower here at Winterberry Gardens. I am a certified Master Gardener, Accredited Nursery Professional and I have a degree in Horticulture.

This season at Winterberry, we’ve been utilizing flood tables (Ebb and Flow) that have the capability to send water to many plants all at the same time at any given notice for as long as you’d like. The flood tables were installed at the beginning of this season inside two of our three growing houses with the third to be completed by the end of this current season.
